What is Esophagitis?
The esophagus is the narrow tube that connects mouth to stomach. The esophagus provides the motility to push swallowed foods and liquids into the stomach and prevents stomach contents from refluxing up. Esophagitis is the medical term for inflammation of the esophagus. Symptoms of esophagitis include chest pain, pain on swallowing or difficulty swallowing.
What Causes Esophagitis?
There are many causes of esophagitis. The most common causes are:
- Acid reflux
- Food allergies (eosinophilic esophagitis)
- Medication induced either by
- Systemic effects such as aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications
- Direct injury to the lining after prolonged contact such as potassium supplements or certain antibiotics
- Radiation induced following cancer treatment
- Caustic burns after poison ingestion
- Infections from viruses or Candida
What are the Symptoms of Esophagitis?
The most common symptoms of esophagitis are:
- Pain beneath the sternum
- Difficulty swallowing or food impaction
- Pain on swallowing
- Heartburn

How is Esophagitis Diagnosed?

Upper endoscopy is the most commonly performed procedure for the most accurate diagnosis. Other tests for more comprehensive evaluation of acid reflux include esophageal manometry to evaluate your swallowing function and pH monitoring.
